Read Along To Know More Tailgate Handles

What Is Tailgate Handle?

The tailgate of your vehicle will have a handle which will help in opening and closing it easily. This is known as the tailgate handle, and is typically made of either plastic or metal. It is hence an external component of the tailgate latch assembly. You can easily spot it attached to the outside of the gates metal panel. Its mechanism is such that it unlatches the door and allows it to swing open as per design of the vehicle. While pick-up trucks might be the first to strike when it comes to tailgates or tailgate handles, they are also part of SUVs, wagons, and vans.

How Does A Tailgate Handle Work?

Basically, the tailgate handle is able to perform its function as it is attached to the tailgate latch assembly. Here it is connected to the internal components which work together in a cohesive manner. These components include the rotating latch mechanism, one pair each of metal rods, and panel latches, and recess holes (on both sides of the truck bed).

The process goes something like this; the internal mechanism of the tailgate latch is dependent on the movement of spring-loaded metal bars. A panel latch helps secure the tailgate to the side of the truck bed which is attached to the opposite ends of these rods. The opposite ends of these same rods are attached to the rotating latch mechanism, via small plastic clips. So, as you lift the tailgate handle the rotating mechanism gets activated, and pulls the rods towards the center panel. This in turn retracts it from the recess homes on the truck bed. Now the tailgate is free to be opened and folded down/swung open as per design of the vehicle.

Frequent Problems With Tailgate Handles

Just like any other component of your vehicle, the tailgate handles are exposed to wear and tear. Since multiple people may use the handle and in varied strengths it can come across certain problems more frequently. Here are some of them:

  1. Deterioration of internal components - Just like the vehicle your tailgate gets exposed to different seasons, and the internal components of the tailgate handle get impacted by them. Extreme temperatures can cause the plastic clips which hold the rods inside the tailgate shell to develop cracks and become brittle. Lack of lubrication in the metal parts can make them develop rust and corrode with time. Any parts that have broken or gotten bent can also make using the tailgate difficult. Performing routine checks can help spot these issues and resolve them at the beginning stages.
  2. Poor functionality of tailgate - A faulty handle can make the tailgate get stuck right at the end and not allow it lay flat. This is a safety issue. A stuck door can make it extremely difficult to assess your vehicle's rear compartment and interfere with loading larger items onto the truck’s bed. Handles can especially get damaged by collision or if large debris have impacted them. It’s better to repair them if possible or simply replace to be able to restore functionality of your tailgate.
  3. Dysfunctional locking system - There’s a purpose to the locking mechanism to your tailgate handle. It helps keep all the content of your vehicle safe and also don’t allow the tailgate to pop open while driving. If you’re experiencing issues with locking the tailgate handle, you will have to seek assistance from a mechanic as soon as possible to mend the issue. After all it’s a safety concern, and this should not be ignored.
