Basically, the tailgate handle is able to perform its function as it is attached to the tailgate latch assembly. Here it is connected to the internal components which work together in a cohesive manner. These components include the rotating latch mechanism, one pair each of metal rods, and panel latches, and recess holes (on both sides of the truck bed).

The process goes something like this; the internal mechanism of the tailgate latch is dependent on the movement of spring-loaded metal bars. A panel latch helps secure the tailgate to the side of the truck bed which is attached to the opposite ends of these rods. The opposite ends of these same rods are attached to the rotating latch mechanism, via small plastic clips. So, as you lift the tailgate handle the rotating mechanism gets activated, and pulls the rods towards the center panel. This in turn retracts it from the recess homes on the truck bed. Now the tailgate is free to be opened and folded down/swung open as per design of the vehicle.

Step 1 - Make space for your hands to work

This step is important as it will allow you room to work. The tailgate handle is secured by a bezel, pull it off.

Step 2 - Remove securing hardware

Grab your 3/8-inch ratchet and socket tool and unbolt the hardware that is present opposite the tailgate handle.

Step 3 - Free up the handle

Do this carefully, this will enable you to visualize the mechanism connecting the handle to the lock of the tailgate.

Step 4 - Separate handle from the linkage

Use the needle - nose pliers to remove the clips which secure the handle to the latching linkage of the tailgate. Do this carefully.

Step 5 - Pull off the old handle all the way

Now carefully pull out the handle and unpack the new replacement to be able to do the next steps.

Step 6 - Install the latching linkage

It’s time now to go reverse in your steps. Start off by grabbing the needle - nose pliers to install the latching linkage to your new handle.

Step 7 - Install the new handle

Do this by gently pushing it, you will hear a click when it has set properly in its place.

Step 8 - Reinstall the clips

Using the same needle - nose pliers, place the clips back in their places

Step 9 - Secure the new handle

Make sure it’s nice and secure by bolting in all the hardware

Step 10 - reinstall the bezel

Simply put the bezel back in its original place and you’re done!
